Activity 2.3: Exploring talent development in practice

Timing: Allow 180 minutes for this activity

Part 1

Your tutor will contact you when they have set up a thread in your TGF in which you can share your contributions within small groups. In Part 2 you will share these discussions with your entire tutor group.

First, spend some time collecting evidence on talent development initiatives in your company of choice. Please note that some organisations may not call their learning and development initiatives ‘talent development’ but you may find that their purpose fits the ideas about talent development discussed so far. You could use the following methods:

  • Direct sources of evidence: these involve people or resources that are directly linked to talent development (either in its broad or narrow view, inclusive or exclusive). For example, learning and development documents within the organisation, interviews with HRD practitioners or even your own views if you are involved in training and development.
  • Indirect sources of evidence: these refer to less explicit sources that, together with direct sources, can help you to understand more about the organisational perspective. For instance, you may find keywords in the organisation’s mission, vision and values that suggest an inclusive view on talent management. You or others may feel that this is, or is not, reflected in learning and development practices.

Once you have collected your different types of evidence you should arrange to share your findings with your fellow group members in the TGF  thread which your tutor will have set up for this purpose. Your posting should contain the following:

  • Introduce your chosen organisation to the rest of the group (sector, size, etc.).
  • Give some example of the talent development initiatives in this organisation.
  • Would you say that the talent development strategy is inclusive or exclusive and defined broadly or narrowly? Does it use a blended approach?
  • What do you regard as the main strengths and weaknesses of this organisation’s approach to talent development?

Once all your group members have shared their examples, agree between yourselves as a group the most important pieces of learning from your discussion.

Part 2

When you are ready, one member of your group should post a summary of your agreed learning points on the whole tutor group TGF discussion thread that your tutor will have started for this activity. Read the posts from each of the other groups and try to respond to at least one of the others.

There is no feedback for this activity.
